What Is Liposuction (Lipoplasty)
This is one of the commonest cosmetic procedures requested in all adult age groups and in both sexes. It is a technique to remove the localised fatty deposits in any body region which tends to persist despite proper diet and exercise. It can be done on any region like the chest, abdomen, hips, inner and outer thighs, buttocks, back, knees, calf, ankle, arms, cheeks, chin, breast, etc.
- It may be done in conjunction with other surgical procedures like tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), breast reduction, face or neck lift. It can be done at multiple site of the body simultaneously, if required. In males with excessive breast enlargement, liposuction helps to remove the excess fat. Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity nor does it help to remove any cellulite.
- An ideal candidate is healthy adult with realist expectations and having a good elastic skin tone with stable weight but with excess and localized fatty deposits resistant to diet and exercise. It can be done under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation depending on the number of regions and the volumes to be extracted.
Procedure
- Very small incisions will be placed in hidden areas or along skin creases. A tumescent liposuction is done whereby the surgeon injects, a large volume of prepared solution into the subcutaneous fat. Fat is then suctioned under negative pressure through a cannular.

- Usually a day care procedure except in massive liposuction where one to two nights of overnight stay is advised.
Recovery Phase
- There may be leakage of the fluid for one to two days from the incision site.
- Most of the bruising subsides in two to three weeks.
- Swelling takes 3 to 6 months or more to subside.
- A customised compression garment is to be worn for 6 weeks which will decrease the swelling and promote better contouring.
- Strenuous exercised to be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks.
The skin contracts eventually to fit the contoured body but is dependent on factors like age, genetics, skin tone and elasticity.
